Good Lights of Bainbridge Island
This NEMA-head light, between the San Carlos and the office building on the
north, has apparently been retrofitted by painting the glass black. This
greatly reduces the glare and light waste from this fixture! It is
not clear who the owner of this light is, but they should be thanked.
Verdict: Good (note though that there is another NEMA on the San Carlos property that has not been painted). |

The Lumbermen's sign on Winslow Way is illuminated from the top (reducing
sky glow) and is shielded (reducing glare).
Verdict: Good |
|
The flat-bottomed cobra head light pictured at left is on Winslow Way. It
produces much less glare than the round bottom version (Winslow Way and High
School Road are a strange mixture of good and bad street lights).
Verdict: Good. |
|
The Washington Mutual building has a sign that is illuminated from the top
by shielded lights. These lights cause no glare or sky glow.
Verdict: Lights on this sign, good. Rest of property, mixed. |
|
The American Marine Bank sign is illuminated from above, the light is shielded
so there is no glare, and the wattage is appropriate for the task at hand.
Verdict: Good |
|
These old-style walkway lights at Chatham Cove are surprisingly good.
Skyglow is reduced by the solid top. Glare is reduced by the
low wattage.
Verdict: Good to average |
|
The lights at American Marine on High School road are flat bottomed, like
the one in this picture.
Verdict: Good. |

These lights, on the buildings in the Island Village complex, have a shield
that reduces sky glow, but do cause some glare. It would have been
better if the shielding was a little lower, so that light emitted from the
filament would not extend above 70 degress from straight down.
Verdict: Average. |
|
Several of these lights, in the Island Village shopping center, illuminate
the parking lot with a good flat bottom light, but use a "prison yard"
light to illuminate the top of the store fronts. The latter causes
sky glow as it illuminates from the side.
Verdict: Mixed |
|
This flat bottomed light at the Chevron Station is a good design.
Verdict: Good (however, there is one bad light on the property). |
|
The lights on the Wells Fargo building are designed to reduce glare and eliminate
sky glow. Note the shielded wall packs and the ceiling lights that
are under the overhang (a great place for lights since no light is lost to
the sky).
Verdict: Good |
|
The Isla Bonita sign is illuminated from the top. Creates an interesting
look and reduces sky glow. One of the lights did seem to have blown
around in the wind.
Verdict: Good |
